The potatoes themselves barely matter — what the film wants is the bowl, wide and shallow enough for a six-year-old to bury his whole face in it. It's the fastest, funniest bit of table manners in the movie, and it needs a proper bowl of mashed potatoes to work.

Method
- Boil the potatoes in well-salted water until fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes. Start them in cold water rather than dropping them into boiling — they cook through evenly instead of going ragged outside while staying firm at the center.
- Drain thoroughly and return to the hot pot for a minute to steam off excess moisture.
- Mash with the butter and warm milk until smooth, or leave them a little rustic — this is a family-table dish, not a restaurant one.
- Season with salt and pepper and serve in a wide, shallow bowl. (An appropriately face-sized bowl, if you're recreating the scene properly.)
