The Solo Asparagus Breakfast
Serve when
Serve it the way Liz does — sitting on the floor, a newspaper for a place mat, eating with her fingers, in no hurry to be anywhere else.
In the movie
Theatrical
- ~01:02:55 Rome: Liz builds herself a slow, solo breakfast — boiled eggs, asparagus, and prosciutto drizzled with olive oil — and eats it on the floor with her fingers, remarking to herself, 'It's a good breakfast, huh?'
It's the smallest food scene in the film and the one that marks the real turning point: the first meal Liz visibly enjoys without narrating her guilt about it. No audience, no performance — just eggs, asparagus, and good oil, eaten on the floor because there's no one to tell her not to. The elaborate feasts come later; this is where the pleasure actually starts.
Ingredients
Method
- Boil the eggs to a firm-but-not-chalky yolk, about 8 minutes, then cool, peel, and halve. Drop them straight into ice water for a few minutes first — the shells slip off instead of tearing the whites.
- Steam or blanch the asparagus until just tender, 3–4 minutes, and let it cool to room temperature.
- Arrange the eggs, asparagus, and prosciutto together on a plate (or, honestly, a newspaper on the floor).
- Drizzle everything generously with olive oil, and finish with flaky salt and pepper.
- Eat slowly, with your fingers, alone, and don't apologize for any of it.
