Christmas Eve Eggnog
Serve when
Pour it right as the chaos peaks at the pizza-night dinner table — someone always asks 'did you get some eggnog?' before the whole house dissolves into headcounts and passports.
In the movie
Theatrical
- 00:08:39 The night before the family flies to Paris, the McCallisters cram around the table for a chaotic pizza dinner — someone asks 'did you get some eggnog?' amid the noise, glasses get poured, and Kevin gets shoved into the pizza that starts the whole chain of events.
The eggnog barely gets a line, buried in a dinner scene that's really about a family about to implode into chaos — pizza math, passport panic, Buzz hoarding the last cheese slice, and Kevin's shove into the pizza boxes that gets him banished to the attic. It's easy to miss on a rewatch, but it's the one properly festive touch on a table otherwise built entirely out of delivery pizza and simmering sibling rage.
Ingredients
Method
- Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together until pale and slightly thickened.
- Warm the milk in a saucepan until just steaming, then slowly whisk it into the egg mixture to temper it.
- Return everything to low heat and stir constantly until it thickens just enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 160°F on a thermometer (the point where the eggs are safely cooked) — do not let it boil.
- Strain, then stir in the cream, vanilla, and nutmeg. Chill for at least a few hours.
- Serve cold in glasses with a fresh grate of nutmeg on top — and a splash of rum for whichever grown-up most needs it after a night like this one.
