Training Dumplings
Serve when
Serve them one at a time, chopsticks at the ready — the last dumpling is Shifu's final exam, and it must be fought for.
In the movie
Theatrical
- 00:58:35 Shifu discovers Po's true motivation is food and trains him through it — culminating in the chopstick duel over the last dumpling, which Po wins and then, full of earned confidence, declines: 'I'm not hungry.'
The dumpling duel is the training montage's payoff — Shifu weaponizing Po's appetite until skill outgrows hunger. It's the rare kung fu fight choreographed entirely around a steamer basket, and it ends on the film's best character beat.
Ingredients
Method
- Mix the filling until tacky.
- Fill and pleat the dumplings.
- Steam 8–10 minutes (or pan-fry as potstickers), until the wrappers turn translucent and the pork is cooked through — 160°F at the center of a test dumpling.
- Serve in a steamer basket in the middle of the table with one pair of chopsticks per fighter.
- The last dumpling goes to whoever earns it. Bonus points for declining it.
