Towering Celebration Cakes
Serve when
Tiered cakes rise around her chaise like furniture while her toes are painted — dessert as set decoration, not a course anyone's about to eat
In the movie
Theatrical
- Marie Antoinette reclines to have her toes painted while elaborate, multi-tiered cakes are arranged around the room like part of the décor
This is the film's most literal image of excess: cakes stacked into towers, arranged around the queen like furniture while she's occupied with something else entirely. No one in the scene is shown eating them — they're there to be looked at, part of Coppola's "candied world" of sugared almonds and rose petals dressing every surface at Versailles.
Ingredients
- For each cake layer (make 2-3 sets for a tiered effect):
- For the decoration:
Method
- Bake several cake rounds in graduated sizes — 10-inch, 8-inch, 6-inch — using your preferred vanilla cake recipe scaled to each pan, about 30–35 minutes at 350°F per layer, until a skewer in the center comes out clean.
- Cool completely, then level and frost each tier separately with buttercream.
- Insert dowels into the larger tiers for support, then stack smallest on top, center to center.
- Finish with sugared almonds, candied flowers, and rose petals scattered across each tier — the film's set dressing rather than a piped design.
- This is built for the tableau, not for slicing neatly — expect it to be more décor than dessert once it's assembled.
