Food Notes
The most famous bowl of instant ramen in animation. Lisa's storm-night ham ramen — noodles dressed with thick ham, a halved egg, and scallions, revealed with a lift of the lid — is one of the most beloved food scenes Studio Ghibli ever made. Miyazaki gives a two-minute cup of ramen the reverence of a feast, and it lands.
Ponyo loves ham. Her obsession starts small, in a car, when she rejects the bread of Sosuke's sandwich and lunges for the ham. It becomes the film's simplest, sweetest emblem of her hunger for the human world — joy you can eat.
Food as safety and wonder. Ponyo is a film about a home on a cliff keeping two small children warm and fed through a magical storm. Its food — the ramen, the ham, a warm cup of tea — is all about comfort, care, and a child's dazzled first tastes of being alive.
