Miyazaki has said the film is bound up with the mother he lost, and the bread-and-jam moment carries that whole weight in a single slice. The animation lingers on the butter and the jam with a reverence usually reserved for grand feasts — because here, an ordinary breakfast is the most precious thing imaginable: a taste you can't get back.

Ingredients

1 thick slice of good white bread (a soft, tender crumb — Japanese shokupan is ideal)
Plenty of cold cultured butter
A generous spoonful of real strawberry jam, fruit-forward and not too sweet

Method

Toast the bread only lightly, or not at all — the film's slice is soft, not crisp.
Butter it while it's barely warm so the butter stays in cool, visible curls rather than melting away entirely.
Ladle on the strawberry jam — thickly, unreasonably, the way a child would want it.
Eat it slowly. This one is about attention more than technique.
