Food Notes
Pixar's most specific food film in years. Domee Shi set Turning Red in a Chinese- Canadian household in early-2000s Toronto, and the food is drawn from the real Taishanese dishes of the city's Chinatown — congee, dumplings, bakery sweets — rendered with the care of someone cooking from memory.
Cooking as a family language. The dumpling-folding scenes do what a lot of families actually do: bond, worry, and negotiate love and control all at the same table, hands busy with filling and wrappers. The meal is the conversation.
A mother's love, plated. Ming's careful breakfasts — congee arranged just so — are the film's whole tension in miniature: nourishing and exacting at once, care and control served in the same warm bowl.
