I Hate My Husband Pie
Serve when
Serve it while narrating its recipe deadpan, as Jenna does: 'You make it with bittersweet chocolate and don't sweeten it. You make it into a pudding and drown it in caramel.'
In the movie
Theatrical
- 00:06:56 One of Jenna's invented, mood-named pies — recipe spoken aloud in her head as she bakes: unsweetened bittersweet chocolate pudding, drowned in caramel. The film's pies are her diary.
Jenna narrates her pies like diary entries — the film's signature device — and this is the most quoted one, the recipe delivered straight to camera in her head. Bitter base, sweet flood: the marriage, in dessert form.
Ingredients
- For the bittersweet filling:
- For the drowning caramel:
Method
- Make the pudding: whisk yolks, cornstarch, the scant sugar, and milk; cook until thick, then melt in the chocolate. Keep it defiantly bitter.
- Pour into the crust and chill until set, 4 hours.
- Make the caramel: melt the sugar to deep amber, then whisk in the butter, then the cream, then the salt. It sputters hard when the cream hits — stand back and use a long-handled whisk.
- Drown the pie — pour the caramel over the whole surface, letting it flood.
- Serve to whoever earned it. The name is a serving suggestion.
