Ingredients

1 small green cabbage, shredded
2 potatoes, diced
2 carrots, sliced
1 onion, chopped
8 cups vegetable or chicken stock
1 bay leaf
salt and pepper
Bread for wiping the bowl (on payday)

Method

Soften the onion in a little fat; add carrots and potatoes for 5 minutes.
Add cabbage, stock, and bay; simmer 30 minutes until everything is tender.
Season properly — poor doesn't mean bland.
Ladle out fairly, grandparents first.
