He hands one to each of the remaining children, swearing them to secrecy so Slugworth can't get his hands on the formula.
The Everlasting Gobstopper is the one invention that actually drives the plot: an un-shrinking candy so valuable to Wonka's rivals that a child stealing one becomes the whole third-act crisis. It's also the purest expression of the film's economics — "for children with little pocket money," a treat built for kids who can't afford to buy more than one. Yours won't literally last forever, but a real hard candy in honest layers gets you close enough.

Method
- Combine the sugar, corn syrup, and water in a heavy saucepan and cook to hard-crack stage, 300°F, without stirring once it boils.
- Divide the syrup and tint each portion a different colour, adding a different flavour oil to each.
- Working quickly while the syrup is still pourable, build a candy in layers: pour a small round of one colour into a mold, let it just set, then add the next colour on top, and so on — this is what gives a real Gobstopper its layered center when you suck through it.
- Let the finished candies cure and harden fully, ideally overnight.
- Hand them out with the same solemn oath Wonka extracts — these are not for selling.
