Fizzy Lifting Drinks are the one Wonka invention still too dangerous to sell — the whole point of the room is that nobody's supposed to touch it — which makes it inevitable that Charlie and Grandpa Joe do. It's the film's tensest sequence dressed as slapstick: real jeopardy (a spinning fan, a locked door) played entirely for laughs. A soda that literally crackles on the way down is as close as a kitchen gets to the real thing.

Method
- Chill the sparkling water as cold as it will go — the fizz holds better cold.
- Stir in the simple syrup and a squeeze of lemon.
- Pour into tall glasses just before serving, then stir in the popping candy right at the table so it's still crackling when it's drunk.
- Drink quickly, before the fizz settles.
- If you start to float, a good loud burp is the only known cure.
