In the series
This is the stew the group cooks for their "Doomcoming" dance — a scrappy, foraged one-pot meal that becomes accidentally significant when Misty's mushrooms end up in it and the whole camp gets unknowingly high. Buried inside the chaos is a real moment of competence: Akilah, drawing on actual Girl Scout training, is the one who correctly identifies and pulls a genuinely poisonous mushroom out of the pot before anyone eats it.
Ingredients
Method
- Bring the stock to a simmer in a large pot.
- Add the onion and simmer until softened, about 10 minutes.
- Add the mushrooms and simmer until tender, another 10 minutes — only ever use mushrooms you can positively identify as edible, or store-bought varieties.
- Stir in the berries in the last few minutes of cooking, letting them soften and release a little of their juice into the broth without fully breaking down.
- Add the wild greens just before serving so they wilt but keep some color. Season with salt and ladle out hot.
Substitutions
- Wild mushrooms: Store-bought oyster, shiitake, or cremini mushrooms are the safe, reliable substitute — never forage mushrooms for this recipe unless you can identify them with total certainty, exactly as the show's own scene insists on.
- Wild berries: Any combination of blackberries and blueberries from a grocery store gives the same sweet-tart contrast against the savory broth.
