Shauna's Rabbit Dinner
Serve when
Serve at a normal family dinner table — the whole point of the scene is how ordinary it looks.

- S1E1 · ~00:45:00 Present-day Shauna kills, skins, and cooks a rabbit from her own garden, serving it for dinner to her husband and daughter
In the series
Adult Shauna kills, skins, and cooks a rabbit from her own backyard garden in the very first episode — a scene the show plays completely straight, right down to her daughter's disgust and her husband's discomfort at the table. It's the show's first hint, delivered entirely through a home-cooked dinner, that whatever happened in the wilderness never really left her.
Ingredients
Method
- Season the rabbit pieces well with salt and pepper.
- Brown the pieces in olive oil over medium-high heat in a heavy pot, then remove and set aside.
- Cook the onion and carrots in the same pot until softened, then add the garlic and cook another minute.
- Return the rabbit to the pot, add the stock, mustard, and thyme, and bring to a simmer.
- Cover and cook gently until the rabbit is tender and cooked through, about 45 minutes, turning the pieces once partway through — the meat should pull easily from the bone when it's done.
Substitutions
- Rabbit: Bone-in chicken thighs are the easiest substitute and cook in roughly the same time; a stewing hen gives a closer, gamier flavor if you want to stay nearer the original.
