The living armor dish is where Delicious in Dungeon starts thinking like ecology instead of parody. The party does not just defeat a monster; they learn how it lives, then learn how it tastes.

Method
- Melt the butter in a wide pot. Add the shallots and garlic and cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
- Add the wine or seafood stock, chicken stock, and bay leaf. Bring to a lively simmer.
- Add the mushrooms and cook for 3 minutes, then add the mussels or clams. Cover and steam until the shells open, 4 to 6 minutes.
- Discard any shellfish that stay closed. Stir in soy sauce, lemon juice, and parsley.
- Serve in shallow bowls with the broth, bread, and lemon.
Substitutions
- Living armor: Mussels or clams are the best visual and structural stand-in because the shell is part of the eating. If shellfish is not workable, use king oyster mushrooms and serve them in cleaned oyster shells or small ramekins for the armor idea.
- White wine: Seafood stock, chicken stock, or water with a squeeze of lemon all work. The wine mainly adds acidity and aroma.
- King oyster mushrooms: They echo the firm bite of the imagined creature. Button mushrooms are fine, but slice them thick and cook them briefly.
- Shellfish safety: Buy live shellfish from a reputable counter, keep them cold, and cook the same day. Discard cracked shells before cooking and closed shells after.
