In the series
Season 1
- S1E6 · ~00:03:10 Mr. Hoshino eats a bowl of rice with his late mother's homemade umeboshi at the counter, the last jar she ever made
In the series
Mr. Hoshino finishes the last jar of his late mother's umeboshi and, that same night, starts dreaming of her trying to get back into his house. The dish is barely a recipe — rice, one sour plum — but it's the last thing of hers he has left, and the episode is really about what happens once it runs out.
Ingredients
Method
- Steam the rice and portion it into a bowl while it's still hot.
- Nestle the umeboshi into the center of the rice.
- Scatter nori strips and sesame seeds over the top and serve immediately, while the rice is still steaming.
Substitutions
- Store-bought umeboshi: Homemade umeboshi, like Mr. Hoshino's mother's, take weeks of salting and sun-drying. A good store-bought jar — look for one without added dyes or sweeteners — gets you the same sharp, salty punch on a weeknight.
